Company Is Not a Family and Business Is Personal

It Is Time to Change the Myths

All these years we have been listening to the wrong concepts which are “Company Is a Family” and “Business Is Not Personal.”

This old concept should be replaced with “Company Is Not a Family” and “Business Is Personal.”

Company Is Not a Family

Let’s learn from Netflix’s Corporate Culture which is published transparently on its website for the public to read. “We model ourselves on being a professional sports team, not a family.”

The company is a ‘Dream Team’ as a Sports Team. The Concept of “Company Is Not a Family” will boost productivity.

Focus on High Performance

Imagine a sports team, everyone needs to put a lot of effort into practicing, collaborating, and working together as a team with a collective goal to win the championship.

If one is slack, then there would be a consequence of being replaced. This is a fair basis that everyone should maintain or perform better, to give their best performance.

In a ‘family concept’ company, quite often the higher performers need to pick up the works of slackers. There are no consequences for slackers that they need to improve their performance.

As a result, the higher performers will get work burnout to carry the load of others. The higher performers are being punished with more work to do and the slackers enjoy their sweet time.

They Support One Another

In a sports team, they work together and support one another, to achieve the collective goal. This is not the case for a ‘family concept’ company, in which often the promotions are based on close connections or nepotism.

This devalues the morale of employees, especially the high performers with great talents and skills. Also, there is no incentive to improve their performance anymore, as their achievement is hardly valued.

The stereotype of nepotism-based leaders seems to be insecure leaders, who perceive threats to high-performers. Due to their insecurity, they engage in office politics to sideline the good talents. The focus has shifted to individual ambition instead of collective goals.

An increase in office politics will result in decreasing employees’ trust, engagement, and loyalty. Finally, the company will experience high employee turnover.

Business Is Personal

Business is supposed to be personal. Business is about a relationship between customers and clients. Every relationship should focus on personal relationships to increase the loyalty of customers and clients, which results to bring revenue for the business.

Personal Care

Businesses should exhibit personal care to customers. This is an example, the gym that I attend, they always greet and smile at me. When I was absent for more than two weeks, they called me and asked the reason for my absence.

When they found out that I was sick, then they expressed concern for my well-being and wished me well. They also advised me to a healthy eating meal and offered me the recipe.

The personal care also includes small complimentary such as free cereals, fruits, coffee, teas, and sauna. Because of those reasons, I am reluctant to join another gym. I feel a sense of belonging, it is like a family.

Improve Quality

Personal care for customers also includes receiving and valuing customers’ feedback. Every feedback will be taken seriously to ensure the satisfaction of customers.

They also improve their quality from major to minor details. The major quality improvement is replacing the old fitness equipment with new fitness equipment complete with smart apps for the convenience of customers.

Then the minor improvement is replacing the new mirror and new shower tiles. Not to mention all minor fixtures such as an iron and its board, hair dryer, hair strengthening, and deodorant.

The more personal focus and attention to detail to customers’ needs and satisfaction, increases customers’ loyalty.
